Animal Ark Reminder, This Friday
The Animal Ark Field Trip will take place
this Friday, May 17th. We will leave school
promptly at 9:15, so please make sure
your student arrives on time.
We still have a few students who need
to send back their permission slips.
If you signed up to chaperone, please note
we are asking you to drive out to the Ark
since we are only taking one bus. Also, since
our time at Animal Ark is very limited,
the Gift Shop is off limits.
The trails at Animal Ark are dirt, so please
have your child wear appropriate shoes,
and also bring an extra layer of clothing
since our weather can change quickly.
This entire field trip is outdoors.
They will need to bring a sack lunch with
drink, and no glass bottles please.
They may bring a camera if they want to.

Field Day Volunteers
Field Day is scheduled for the morning of
May 31st. The kids look forward to this
day every year. We can't do it without
parent volunteers so we need your help!
If you have some time to spare, please
email us or send in a note.
Thank you!

Music Program Time Change
The music program has been rescheduled for
Wednesday, May 29th at 1:00.

Animal Report Info
The complete directions for the May 6th
Animal Report went home last night in your student's homework folder. They should have chosen their animal
book from the library. A few of them have overdue
books and will need to return one  so the librarian
can check out their animal book.

Below are two examples of the format
for the Animal Report.
You may come to the classroom if you'd like to
see them in person, or if you have any questions.

Our class has raised $240 and surpassed our
goal of $200 to adopt Jamar,
the cheetah and Eli, the black bear!

The book sale was a huge success!
Thank you for all your help!
We are now sharing the books we did not sell with Mrs. Fredrickson's class so they can meet their goal to adopt the white tiger, Khan. If there are any books leftover we will donate them, through Mrs. Benesch, to a worthy cause!

Eli - LG

Common Name: North American Black Bear
Scientific Name: Ursus americanus
Gender: Male
Birth Date: February 20, 2010

History: In November 2010, Animal Ark received a call from the Nevada Department of Wildlife. An orphaned bear cub had been found in the freezing meadows off Mt. Rose Highway. The cub would not have lasted another night by itself. The Bear League at Lake Tahoe saved this animal’s life, but the small bear cub was in need of new housing. The original intention was for Animal Ark to rehabilitate and release the cub as part of its black bear rehabilitation program. Upon its arrival, we were surprised to see a malnourished, tiny bear weighing approximately 14 pounds. At this time of year, a healthy bear cub should weigh 60 to 100 pounds. Assuming it was a female, the cub was named Little Girl (LG). While LG was small in stature, there was no lack of personality or bold confidence! During LG’s first veterinary exam, both tops of the ears (the pinna) fell off due to frostbite. Fortunately, the ears had begun to heal and did not require treatment. Two things were realized at this vet visit: (1) LG would never have normal looking ears, and (2) our little girl was actually a little guy! LG’s boldness, along with the loss of his ear tips, did not make him a good release candidate. LG was given a permanent home at Animal Ark.

Moyo & Jamar
Common Name: Cheetah

Scientific Name: Acinonyx Jubatus
Gender: Male, Male
Birth Date: June 19, 2005

History: Moyo and Jamar arrived at Animal Ark on April 11, 2006 after a very long flight aboard British Airways traveling from Cape Town South Africa via London and then to San Francisco International Airport. They come to Animal Ark as ambassadors for the De Wildt Cheetah Centre and Wildlife Trust. This South African facility has partnered with Animal Ark to help raise funds for wild cheetah conservation, a volunteer exchange program and research into the benefits of high speed running for captive cheetah. Born at De Wildt, these cubs were transferred to the Cheetah Outreach facility in CapeTown where they were raised by experts in the care of cheetah cubs and the training of ambassador cats. Moyo & Jamar have adjusted very well here at Animal Ark which has many similarities to the South African facilities.

Animal Ark Book Sale Next Week

Our Animal Ark Book Sale will be next week, the last week in March. Our goal will be to raise at least $100 in order to adopt Jamar, the cheetah, from Animal Ark in time to visit him during our field trip to the Ark in May.  If we raise more than $100, we will also adopt Eli, the black bear. We have some great books to sell that have been donated  by the students.  This is the last call if you still have books to drop off. All of the books will be set up in our class store and will sell for $1 or less.  Next week please try to send your student in with money to shop at our Book Sale.  There will also be a donation jar set up in our classroom for donations. Thank you so much for all your help with this worthy cause.

 Art Auction Update!
The Art Auction was held last night at The California Building at Idlewild Park - Art in the Park.
All of the CRES Art Projects were on display for the silent auction, as well as other donated items.
The PTA did a fantastic job on this event!
Thank you to the all the parents who were able to
join us.  We had quite the bidding war going
on! Our class painting "Birds at Dusk" and "Movie with the Teacher" raised over $400 for our school. Again, "thank you" to the families who were able to participate.
It was a great event!

Let the Craziness Begin

Next week is super busy.  There are a few things that have been added to March that are not on the calendar that was originally posted. Here's what's going on...
  • Tuesday is our field trip to the Discovery Museum.  We'll be leaving between 9-9:30 and returning sometime between 11:30-12:00.  The students will need to bring a cold lunch that day.
  • Tuesday is also our Open House.  Families are invited to check out the class art auction project and have their children give them a tour of the school and their classrooms.
  • Friday is "dress up like your favorite book character day."
  • Friday night is the Art Auction from 6-9 in the California Building at Idlewild Park.  Make sure to buy your tickets for this fun, fancy parents' night out that's a great cause for our school!!
Also, coming up....
  • March 22nd- End of the Grading Period
  • March 26th-29th- Used book sale for Animal Ark in classroom
  • March 26th- Spring Picture Day
  • March 28th- Skate Night
  • March 29th- Report Card #3 goes home
  • March 31st- Easter
Please continue to send in any used children's books that you have at home.  We have a great collection going and the kids are excited to see if we can raise $100.

We also desperately need items of any kind for our classroom banking store.  We are down to the bare minimum so we really can't do coupon shopping until we replenish.  We hope you can help!  Thanks in advance for anything you can do!

Animal Ark March Book Sale

As you can see on the March calendar below we will have our used book sale the last week of March.  The goal will be to raise at least  $100 in order to adopt one animal from Animal Ark in time for our field trip there in May.  If we raise more we will adopt a second animal.   Last week we looked at the animals and voted as a class to hopefully adopt Zulu, the cheetah.  We have some great books that have been brought in but the more books we have to "sell" the better chance we'll have of raising $100.  So please take some time to go through any children's books that you may have at home and send in any that you are no longer using or have been read many, many times. :) All of the books will be set up as a store and sold for $1 or less.  Let us know if you have any questions. :)

**Field Trip Cost Update**

A note went home Friday for our upcoming field trip stating that the cost is $7.  Since booking the field trip the second graders received the opportunity to take a special class while at the museum and we decided to take them up on this opportunity.  Because of this we need to add $1 to the cost of the field trip.  We are sorry for the confusion and inconvenience.  The cost of the field trip is now $8.  Any students who already sent in the $7 will receive coupons when they bring in the extra $1.  Any parents that would like to chaperone can just let us know and they will still purchase their tickets at the museum that day.  Thank you!  Let us know if you have any questions.

Field Trip to the Discovery Museum
We will be going on a field trip to the Discovery Museum on March 12th.  That is also the day of our Open House. The cost for the students is $7 including the museum ticket and bus.  A note is in your child's Friday Folder this week. Chaperones will purchase their own tickets at the museum the morning of the field trip.  We will be gone from approximately 9:15-11:45. Please send a cold lunch in with your child that day since we may be late returning to school and would have to eat in our classroom.
Please send in the signed permission slip with the money ASAP. We'd like to have it in by next Friday, March 1st, if at all possible. If you'd like to help out and chaperone, please indicate that on the bottom of the permission slip form.
